Crimean News Media Registration Transition Period is Over

April 10, 2015

News media registration transition period is over in the Crimean Federal District.

A total of 232 Crimean news media are currently registered with Roscomnadzor, including 8 online media, 19 television channels, 42 radio channels, and 163 print media and news agencies.

207 media used to have Ukrainian licenses and have been re-registered. Another 25 are Russian news media (one online medium, two television channels, 8 radio channels, and 14 print media and news agencies) that are new entrants to the Crimea’s media market.

In November 2014, the RF State Duma passed a decision to extend the transition period for Crimean news media till 1 April 2015. During that period, news media whose products were intended for dissemination in the territory of the two constituent entities of the Russian Federation – the Republic of Crimea and the Federal-status city of Sevastopol – were registered according to a special procedure, with no state duty imposed. Also, Ukrainian licenses remained valid during the transition period.

News media registration continues in the Crimea according to the regular procedure in compliance with Russian laws. Please, note that registration submissions mailed prior to 1 April 2015 (as evidenced by the postal stamp) will be examined according to the special procedure that was in effect prior to the mailing date.
